Oakley Creek Restoration

Auckland, New Zealand

Firm
Boffa Miskell
Type
Landscape + Planning › Masterplan Waterway/Wetland
STATUS
Under Construction
Oakley Creek Te Auaunga in west Auckland has been realigned and restored for over a kilometre as part of Transit New Zealand’s State Highway 20 Waterview Connection construction project. Boffa Miskell worked closely with the Well Connected Consortium, in particular Tonkin & Taylor engineers and Fletcher’s construction teams, to resolve challenges of variable geology and significant flood flows and deliver a significantly improved stream environment in West Auckland.
Boffa Miskell is now working with Auckland Council and AECOM engineers to restore the next 1.5km upstream at Walmsley and Underwood Reserve. The digital environments team has created a virtual flythrough to accompany video captured by a drone for the Auckland Council as part of the Te Auaunga Awa project. The drone video, when synchronised with the animated flythrough, illustrates the proposed extent of stream restoration and wetland areas.

The restoration of Te Auaunga Awa through Walmsley and Underwood Reserves is a unique project for Auckland Council, the local community, and Mana Whenua to transform this open space, and create a lasting legacy for the Mt Roskill area.
Te Auaunga Awa project is intended to remedy significant flooding issues in three Local Board areas, while establishing an accessible river park along Te Auaunga Awa. The river park will offer restored native ecologies, walking and cycleways, and opportunities for play, gathering, and learning. In addition Te Whangai trust will set up a local nursery to eco-source plants, deliver on significant ongoing community involvement in the project, and set up training to employment opportunities for local people.

Construction is planned for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 financial years, and has recently gone out to Tender for the Physical Works. Prior to construction there will be a re-filming of the area and ongoing filming of the construction.
