Jomfrustien used to be a scenic park stretch, vibrant due to the travelers from the neighboring central station and appealing for Sunday strolls and recreation. The abandonment of the central station and the subsequent lack of coherent planning, led to doubtful decisions and an area with only few traces of the original qualities. Parts of Jomfrustien is dominated by randomly placed warehouses and big-box stores, that leaves the city dissolved and far from the human scale. Further more large areas of the park are paved and has a lower position that the surroundings, which result in frequent floods.
The urban transformation consist of three main initiatives: Create a denser city with a clear edge toward Jomfrustien, restore the unifying park stretch with extensive blue and green qualities and place future landmarks, so they support urban life and activity.
The diffuse edge of the park is sharpened, by relocating commercial activities in buildings placed in the park, to a future row of open commercial buildings along the rail way. The big-box stores can incrementally be embedded with housing that defines the perimeter of the plots and hides the huge parking areas. The park is strengthened by a new topography with hills and lakes made with a balanced use of soil. The surface is highly permeable and diverse in order to absorb and store rainwater even by heavy cloudbursts. Finally the bus station will be moved from the current and rather anonymous location to a spot by the end of the park, which will generate a significant flow of travelers and activity. At the other end of the park a maritime house and convention center creates a clear destination and a link to the harbor and the water.
