The East Midtown Greenway (EMG) is a new elevated waterfront park and esplanade for pedestrians and cyclists on Manhattan's East Side, from 53rd to 61st streets where the FDR previously precluded access to the waterfront. Part of the 32-mile Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, it offers a unique over-water experience and connects to the adjacent neighborhood via a pedestrian bridge at East 54th Street. An integrated team of landscape architects and engineers designed EMG's in-water structure to support trees and plantings while maintaining a thin structural profile. The design provides generous soil volume for trees, captures stormwater for irrigation, and rises above future storm elevations.
