Ansonia Apartment

Small and awkward needed to become grand and sweeping.

This project was an archeological dig. Our client had purchased three stacked, undistinguished, tricky apartments in the dome atop the stately, legendary beaux-arts Ansonia on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The dome, while dramatic on the outside, was divided into small spaces inside. The first solution was to remove the slab separating two floors in order to create a 30-foot high living room rotunda.

The lower floor then could serve as an elegantly proportioned, light-filled reception hall, and home office and media room. A new steel and glass stair was added that ascends to the main level of the apartment. Structural ceiling vaults and the sloped mansard roof were exposed adding the feel of more space and light. The restored ornamental steel stair in the new living room now sweeps 20 feet up to a new dramatic balcony leading to the multi-level rooftop terrace.
